The World Wide Web (W3, the Web) started in the late 1980s when Tim Berners-Lee (a particle physisit from Switzerland) proposed a new system of communicating over the internet. He was a member of a group called CERN, which is a research institute located across a number of continients in a variety of countries. He wanted an easy way to have all the members have access to similar information. Hence, the World Wide Web was born!
