Here's
an example of how the process works:
- Running a Web client (browser), you can click a hyperlink on
the Web page. The link tells the server what document to retrieve. This starts the client
request process.
- The Web client connects to a computer specified by a network
address that exists somewhere on the Internet and asks that computers Web server for
the document specified by the link.
- The server responds by sending the document and any other
media within that document (pictures, sounds, or movies) back to the Web client, which
displays the document on your screen.
The World Wide Web is composed of thousands of these
client/server transactions taking place every hour throughout the world. This creates a
web of information flow.
