Have you looked into Harvest? That might do it out of the box.

There's always EWS, Excite for Web servers.

I'd like a tool that will allow me to index my entire directory hierarchy.
Ideally, it should allow me to specify base URLs like

file:/home/dolphin/skip/...

and return them in that form so I can both limit access from external hosts
and have the fastest loading possible. Will harvest do the trick?

I guess what I'm really asking for is a WAIS-like indexer with an
easy-to-use WWW interface.
