Couldn't you just use non-permanent redirects (Status: 302) for your
home page, no matter if it's a robot or a visitor? Some robots will index
the page you redirected to (probably fine, as you want that page to be indexed
anyway), some will index that page as the home page (not a big deal usually),
and some will not index it at all (probably fine also).
