Project REUSE: German libraries and OCLC cooperate to align international standards

In October 1995, OCLC and the State and University Library of Göttingen (SUB Göttingen), seat of the Regional Library Network for Central and Northern Germany (GBV), agreed to join in Project REUSE with the goal of enhancing international bibliographic compatibility.

The final report describes the project, gives an account of the results of several investigations undertaken by project participants, and concludes with a series of suggested actions to increase the usability of bibliographic data internationally.

During the course of the project, participants benefited from a comparison of corporate name headings created according to the Regeln für die alphabetische Katalogisierung (RAK) and headings for the same corporate bodies created according to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, and found in the Library of Congress Name Authority File. This comparison, titled "Vergliech RAK-Beispiele Körperschaften mit in LOCNA gefunden Körperschaften," was prepared by Monika Humpertz and Günter Hupfer of the Hochschulbibliothekszentrum des Landes Nordhein-Westfalen and translated by Monika Münnich of the University of Heidelberg with assistance from Jim E. Cole of Iowa State University.

A continuation of Project REUSE has examined different types of representations of heirarchical bibliographic structures.
