The RLG Preservation Program (PRESERV)
Purpose
This program for Research Libraries Group members combines informational resources and collaborative projects to support institutions in their efforts to preserve and improve access to endangered research materials. PRESERV has a distinguished history of positive change in how research collections conduct preservation. It gives participants a collective voice in preservation practices worldwide, helps them to expand local expertise, and fosters practical, readily applied solutions to key issues in long-term retention.
Of RLG's current key initiatives, Long-term Retention of Digital Research Materials most closely affects and intersects with this program.
How PRESERV Operates
The program's agenda stems from the strategic plan endorsed by PRESERV participants at the close of 1996. The plan was developed by the PRESERV Advisory Council, individuals from within and outside RLG who work with RLG program officers. Individuals may volunteer or be invited to serve on task forces and working groups that address specific issues. Participation in the unmoderated electronic Preservation Discussion group is open to anyone at a member institution, and all members have ready access to program officers and the advisory council.
