Part I: Eugen Kölbing and the Foundational Period (1877-1899)
Annotated Bibliography

The following chronological bibliography contains all titles (with short annotations) discussing any aspect of medieval literature, language, and culture (from c. 400 through c. 1500) published in Englische Studien from 1877 through 1899. Please note that, since the founding editor, Eugen Kölbing, had not originally conceived the publication as a periodical with fixed publication dates, there are several years during which two volumes were published (1889, 1892, 1895, and 1898) and one year when no volume was published at all (1878), thus making it impossible to establish a regular equation between volume number and year of publication.

As Alfons Kissner (Chaucer in seinen Beziehungen zur italienischen Literatur, 1867) had come to very similar results in his comparison of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and Boccaccio's Filostrato, Rambeau concludes that Chaucer had read and studied Italian and that he was working from an original copy of the Divine Comedy when writing the House of Fame.

Defends his thesis (against J. M. Kemble, K. Müllenhoff, H. Möller, and B. He also claims that the final version of the Beowulf epic by Cynewulf shows ample parallels with the OE Andreas legend, parallels which convince him that both texts were produced by the same poet.

Volume 25 (1898)

Schade, A[rthur]. "Ueber das Verhältnis von Pope's January and May and The Wife of Bath, Her Prologue zu den entsprechenden Abschnitten von Chaucer's Canterbury Tales." ESt 25 (1898), 1-130.
Originally a 1897 Breslau doctoral dissertation; this first part of Schade's essay (the second part was published in ESt 26, 1899), a detailed and thorough comparison of Chaucer's "Merchant's Tale" and Pope's "translation," January and May, or the Merchants Tale. From Chaucer (1709), is a case study in the making of the Middle Ages by a postmedieval writer. Schade concludes that Pope did not translate but adapt his predecessor's texts: Pope concentrates more on May's adultery and neglects any of the more serious aspects of Chaucer's tale; his artistic intentions and his audience's horizon of expectation make him omit passages on sexuality, marriage, and the reasons for choosing a young wife, thus reducing both the humor and naivité of the source texts.

From Chaucer (1709), is a case study in the Making of the Middle Ages by a postmedieval writer. Schade concludes that Pope did not translate but adapt his predecessor's texts.
