Linux and Robot development...

I'm looking for a semi-fleshed out skeleton code for a small C or C++ (if
I have to learn C++ it might as well be something interesting) robot that
is known to run on Linux or Unix libraries (gcc 2.6.3 I think). I've been
stumbling on the tough stuff (sockets, ports, and protocols and how to get
data from a socket to strings) and failing miserably.

Anyone got any suggestions for where I should be looking (ftp sites, web
pages, archies?). I'm getting nowhere fast on my own..
