I mentioned AltaVista simply because it is the only search engine that
registers errors in my server's error logs.

Yes, this is what I have done. I was looking for a "cleaner" approach so
that we do not need to keep numerous "moved.html" files in old locations,
thus a "cleaner" file structure on the server(s). The "moved.html" (not its
real name) uses that META tag, gives the user 10 seconds to read its
contents before the new location loads automatically.
